Kenya is urbanising at one of the fastest rates in Africa. As cities grow and the built environment expands, the spaces we inhabit — our offices, homes, hospitals, schools and public buildings — are increasingly shaping our physical health, mental wellbeing and social behaviour. Research consistently shows that Kenyans now spend over 90% of their time indoors, making the quality of interior environments a critical public health concern.
Interior designers, architects and other built environment professionals are uniquely positioned at the intersection of aesthetics, function and human experience. Yet, the conversation around health and wellbeing as a design imperative — rather than a luxury — remains nascent in Kenya's professional discourse.
Globally, frameworks such as the WELL Building Standard, Biophilic design principles and evidence-based design are reshaping how spaces are conceived and delivered. From indoor air quality and acoustic comfort to circadian lighting, thermal comfort and mental health-supportive layouts, the science of healthy buildings is advancing rapidly. Kenya's built environment professionals must be equipped to lead this transformation locally.
